  1. A blink lasts approximately one tenth of a second but there is no clear cut average number of blinks per minute. In fact, blink rates per minute vary from 2 blinks to 50 blinks per minute per person. This means that in one minute people spend between 1/5 of a second to 5 seconds with their eyes closed! Unless you are a baby, in which case you won’t actually start blinking until you are 6 months old…
  2. Your eye is a scientific wonder. The human eye functions a lot like a camera, only much more complicated. Your eye adjusts to light and dark. Try performing this basic experiment: Walk into the bathroom with the lights off and then turn on the light while looking in the mirror. Watch how your pupil shrinks.
  3. You actually only see three colors; red, blue, and green. All other colors are created through the combination of these three colors. The light, which is colorless, reflects off of objects and is then perceived by the eye. Through the combination of these three basic colors, your eyes can help you to detect approximately 10 million different color hues.
  4.  You eye weighs only about 28 eight grams and is approximately two and half centimeters wide, but contains 6 muscles. These muscles work together to achieve the precision that allows the human eye to follow moving objects.
  5. Melanin is the pigment that gives your eyes color. People with brown eyes simply have more melanin than people with blue eyes. However, if you have blue eyes did you know that you have a common ancestor with every other blue-eyed person on the planet? Scientists believe the first blue-eyed person to have lived between 6,000 and 10,000 years ago.
  6. Eye transplants are not yet possible to make the blind see because the optic nerve is so complex and sensitive and it has not yet been discovered how to regenerate healthy retinal cells. However, progress is constantly being made in the field.
  7. There are two different kinds of cell in your eyes that allow you to see. They are named for their shape; rod cells and cone cells. You have about 130 million rods and 7 million cones cells in your eyes. Rods are the cells which help you to see in the dark.
